Inspiration and Making: My version of a traditional ‘Chawan’ or Japanese tea bowl has brought me so much pleasure to create. Each piece is thrown on the Potter’s Wheel, intuitivey listening to the clay material and responding to the moment in time when it is created. I apply sticky slip to the outer walls creating a landscape of texture for you to enjoy exploring while you drink your tea. Each piece is glazes with a traditional Shino glaze and marked with my name ‘Sonya’ in Japanese Kanji on the base.

Sustainability: Where possible, I once fire my vessels, meaning they have a lower carbon foot-print. I use green energy to run my electric kilns and enjoy pit firing when appropriate. Many of the clays I use are mindfully foraged from local areas and I also up-cycle discarded clays from local schools.
